Jig & Pop
TUNA
July and August offers great inshore fishing, BUT what really gets me fired up is our offshore fishery! The bluefin tuna usually show up first, in late June and into early July. Every year is different, regarding numbers and size of the tuna that show up, locally - June through November. Every day is unique in its own way as well, keeping you on your toes, waiting for that “moment of glory”. That’s what really makes targeting tuna via spin rod so suspenseful and totally nuts!
So the Bluefin thing really starts to ramp up late June or early July, just off our coastline, sometimes within sight of the beach! This is when we switch gears towards getting clients on Tuna offshore Run & Gun / Jig & Pop style! Throughout the month of July, yellowfin begin to mix in with the bluefin making this why our fishery is so unique in the Northeast, there aren’t many places you can drop a jig down or throw a popper and not know whether a bluefin or yellowfin is going to destroy it! We primarily focus on Bluefin Tuna but over the past few seasons the mid-shore Yellowfin Tuna bite has also been great fun! It’s a very humbling experience to watch Giant Bluefin Tuna and Yellowfin Tuna air out on your popper! A perfect trip for a new Captain, fisherman or boat owner - or just someone trying to get familiar with the North East Jig & Pop game. It definitely helps to do your first trip offshore with an experienced, licensed USCG Captain, first - hand, before doing it alone!
Most of this action occurs within site of Block Island and Cape Cod! I have personally put Bluefin Tuna over 150 pounds and Yellowfin Tuna over 75 pounds on board my boat, using nothing but spinning gear, so this trip isn’t for the faint of heart, but with good weather, don’t let anyone tell you that it can’t be done on a skiff! Mahi Mahi and White Marlin are also a common bycatch during blue water adventures! ideally, Capt. Pete runs most of these trips on a vessel that is rigged for this kind of fishing and in need of an experienced Captain and everything needed for tuna fishing, including rods, reels, tackle, gear, safety equipment, etc. If a trip like this is on your bucket list, please reach out, directly to Captain Pete Henderson and we will make it happen!
